Where the comparison gets interesting is the quality of the connection during that limited window. Atlas VPN uses WireGuard as its primary protocol, which contributes to faster throughput than OpenVPN. What the Shutdown Changed
April 24, 2024 stands as the single most significant date in this app's history. That was the day the developer officially discontinued Atlas VPN and migrated all paid subscribers to NordVPN. The free tier did not migrate. It simply stopped receiving updates and support. The Play Store page still exists, and the APK still installs and connects, but the underlying infrastructure is now in maintenance mode. No new servers have been added since that date, and the server count listed at 49 locations is static.
The developer has not published a specific changelog for the Android version since before the shutdown. The What's New section remains blank. This absence of information means any claim about bug fixes or performance improvements in the current version cannot be verified. The only confirmed change after April 2024 is the backend routing — connections now pass through a different set of gateways, likely the same ones NordVPN uses, but the Android client itself has not received a new version number or feature update.
For users who already have the app installed, the experience is largely unchanged. For new users downloading the APK from third-party sites, the onboarding flow still works, but the referral links to Premium upgrades now redirect to NordVPN's pricing page. The kill switch and split tunneling features remain functional on the Android client, but they were never updated to address the known IPv6 leak issues reported on Linux. This inconsistency across platforms is a direct result of the development halt.
The Linux Client Quirk
In late 2023, a security researcher published proof-of-concept code showing that the Linux client version 1.0.3 leaked the user's real IP address when configured with specific routing tables. The exploit required the attacker to be on the same local network, but it exposed a fundamental flaw in how the client handled IPv6 traffic. The fix was never rolled out to the Android version because the codebases diverged early in development. However, the Android client uses the same core VPN service architecture, which means the underlying packet routing logic shares similarities.
On Android, users have reported that enabling split tunneling while connected to a WireGuard server causes the device to drop the VPN tunnel entirely when switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. The app reconnects automatically, but the session resets, losing the SafeSwap IP rotation state. This combination of features — split tunneling and SafeSwap — creates a conflict where the app cannot reliably maintain both simultaneously. The developer's own documentation never mentions this interaction because the documentation predates the split tunneling feature's introduction. The Android version does not have the IPv6 leak, but it does suffer from the same routing-table fragility that plagued the Linux client.
