About Chatty

Opening the Chatty app for the first time presents a login screen. No tour, no walkthrough. You enter your WhatsApp Business number and wait for verification. The app checks if your number is approved by Meta. If it is pending, you see a status message and cannot proceed. This is the first friction point. Many users never get past this screen because their WhatsApp Business number isn't properly set up with two-factor authentication or hasn't been approved by Meta. The app does not guide you through this process. It simply shows "Pending" and stops.

Once logged in, the interface reveals a dashboard with a search bar, a list of recent conversations, and a menu for settings. The design is sparse. There is no onboarding overlay explaining what each button does. The core function — lead source tracking — is not visible upfront. You have to dig into the settings to find the UTM tracking setup. The app expects you to already know what UTMs are and how to use them. For a business owner who just wants to see where their WhatsApp leads come from, this is a barrier.

How lead tracking and AI automation work together

The lead source tracking feature and the AI automation feature are separate in the interface but deeply connected in practice. When a visitor clicks an ad with a UTM parameter, the Chatty Pixel script captures that data. The app stores the source information and attaches it to the conversation when the lead messages the business on WhatsApp. This happens automatically. The AI agent then reads that source data and can send a tailored response. For example, if the lead came from a Facebook ad for a specific product, the AI can mention that product in its first reply. This creates a personalized experience without the business owner writing a single message.

This workflow is powerful but fragile. The AI agent needs to be trained on what to say for each source. The training process is manual. You have to create response templates for each campaign. If you have ten active campaigns, you need ten different templates. The app does not suggest templates based on the source type. It gives you a blank text box and expects you to fill it. This puts the burden back on the business owner. The automation only works as well as the templates you write.

Another limitation emerges when a lead comes from an organic source with no UTM data. The app cannot track the origin. It shows "Unknown" or leaves the field blank. This is not the app's fault — it is a limitation of how UTMs work — but the app does not explain this. Users might assume the tracking is broken when they see blank fields. The help center articles on the website explain UTM setup in detail, but the app itself offers no in-app guidance. You have to leave the app, read the documentation, and come back.

Real-world performance: bugs and glitches

The version changelog for Chatty lists one fix: "Arreglo de errores en login Android" — Android login error fix. This is a specific and telling update. Login errors are not minor issues. They block access entirely. The fact that this fix was needed suggests that the authentication flow was broken for some users. Reviews on the Shopify App Store mention similar problems: app bugging, lost customer requests, and slow support responses. One user reported losing a full day of customer support because the app stopped working. Another said the app slowed down their entire website, affecting user experience.

The app does not show ads. There is no in-app advertising. The free version appears to have no limitations on core features. This is unusual for a business tool. Most lead management apps have paid tiers with usage caps. Chatty seems to offer everything for free, at least for now. The absence of monetization within the app suggests the company is prioritizing user acquisition over revenue. But this also raises questions about long-term sustainability. If the app remains free, how will the company fund development and support?

Performance issues are not limited to the Android app. The Shopify version of Chatty has similar complaints. Users report that the AI bot provides poor answers, that the system gets stuck in loops, and that the app logs users out frequently. These patterns suggest a broader stability problem across the platform. The Android app may inherit the same backend issues. The changelog does not mention performance improvements or bug fixes beyond the login error. This means other known issues may remain unresolved.

What the app does well

Despite the bugs, the app has strengths. The lead source tracking is genuinely useful. Businesses that run multiple ad campaigns on Facebook, Google, and other channels can finally see which campaigns drive WhatsApp conversations. This data is not available in WhatsApp Business alone. The app fills a real gap. Users who set up the tracking correctly report that it helps them optimize their ad spend. They can stop wasting money on campaigns that do not convert.

The team chat management feature is another strong point. You can assign conversations to specific team members, reassign them, and track who handled which lead. This is essential for businesses with multiple sales agents. Without this feature, conversations would be scattered across personal WhatsApp accounts. The app centralizes everything in one inbox. The interface for assignment is straightforward: you tap a conversation, select an agent, and the chat moves to their queue. It works as advertised.

The quick replies feature saves time. You can create pre-saved messages with text, audio, or files. This is useful for answering common questions about pricing, shipping, or product details. The app does not limit the number of quick replies you can create. You can build a library of responses and use them with a single tap. This reduces the time spent typing the same answers repeatedly.

Connecting to WhatsApp and the pending issue

The connection process is the most critical part of the app. You need a WhatsApp Business account linked to a Facebook page. The app checks with Meta's API to verify your number. If your number is not approved, you see "Pending" and cannot proceed. The help center explains that two-factor authentication must be enabled and that Meta's approval process can take time. But the app does not show this information. It just shows the status and stops. Users who are not aware of the approval process may think the app is broken.

Once connected, the app syncs your conversations. The sync speed depends on your internet connection and Meta's API response times. The app does not show a progress indicator. Conversations appear gradually. This can be confusing. You might open the app and see no messages, then refresh and see a few, then refresh again and see more. The app does not explain that syncing is happening in the background. It gives the impression that messages are missing.

The app does not require any special permissions beyond network access. It does not ask for location, camera, or microphone. This is consistent with its role as a messaging management tool. It does not need to access your device's hardware. It only needs to communicate with Meta's servers and your WhatsApp account. The absence of permission requests is a positive signal for privacy-conscious users.

The Android login error fix in the latest version indicates that the developer is actively addressing issues. But the fix is specific to login. Other reported problems — glitches, slow performance, AI errors — are not mentioned in the changelog. Users should expect that some issues may persist. The app's stability depends on factors outside the app itself, such as Meta's API availability and the user's network conditions. The app cannot control these variables. When they fail, the app fails with them.
