About Chérie FM : Radios & Podcasts - Apps on Google Play
What happens the second you open Chérie FM
The app loads directly into the live radio stream. No splash screen asking what you want to listen to. No sign-up form. Just the current broadcast from Chérie FM playing within about two seconds on a stable connection. The interface shows the now-playing artist and track name at the top, with a large play/pause button below it. Below that, a horizontal row of tabs: Radios, Podcasts, Favorites, and Account. The radio keeps playing even when you navigate away from the home screen. This is the core behavior that defines the app — it is a player first and everything else second. The audio streams at 576 kbps, which is higher than most competing radio apps. For comparison, many free radio apps cap at 128 or 192 kbps. The difference is audible on good headphones or car speakers — the high hat and vocal clarity come through without the muffled compression typical of lower-bitrate streams. But that quality comes with a data cost. Streaming at 576 kbps uses roughly 4.3 MB per minute. A 30-minute commute consumes about 130 MB. On a limited mobile plan, that adds up fast. The app does not warn you about this before playback starts. It simply begins streaming the moment you open it, which is a design choice that prioritizes immediacy over data awareness.
How the wake timer and offline downloads work together
The smart wake timer lets you set a specific radio station or podcast episode as your alarm. The app starts playing that content at the scheduled time. This works even if the phone is in do-not-disturb mode. The audio fades in gradually over about ten seconds rather than hitting you at full volume. But there is a catch. If you set a podcast as your wake-up content and do not have it downloaded, the app needs a data connection to stream it at alarm time. A weak signal at 6 AM means the alarm either plays nothing or buffers repeatedly. The offline download feature solves this. You can download any podcast episode and up to 30 minutes of select radio shows while on Wi-Fi. Then set that downloaded episode as your wake content. The app plays the local file at alarm time. No data connection required. No buffering. No surprise silence. This combination — wake timer plus offline download — turns the app into a reliable morning companion rather than a gamble. The downloaded content stays on the device until you manually delete it. The app does not auto-clear old downloads. Over time, this can fill storage if you download episodes regularly. The app shows a storage indicator in the settings menu, but it does not push notifications when space runs low.
The webview update changed more than the changelog admits
Version 26.6.1 introduced a webview improvement for smoother navigation and reduced loading times, according to the official changelog. What the changelog does not say is that this webview change altered how the webradio theme selection works. Before this update, choosing a themed webradio — like Chérie Feel Good Music or Chérie RNB 200 — was a straightforward list. Tap the theme, and it starts playing. In the current version, the webview loads a full webpage inside the app for theme selection. This takes three to five seconds longer than the old native list. It also requires an active data connection just to see the list of themes. The old version cached the theme list locally. The new one does not. Users have reported this as a downgrade in usability. The developer response has acknowledged the feedback but has not reverted the change. The webview also affects the "What's this song?" feature. That feature now loads a webview to display the last 24 hours of played tracks. Previously, it was a native scrollable list. The webview loads slower and does not support smooth scrolling on older devices. On a Samsung Galaxy S8 running Android 8.0, the webview stutters when scrolling through the track list. The app officially supports Android 8.0 and above, but the performance on that minimum version is noticeably worse than on newer devices.
The permission that determines whether the app works at all
The app requires location permission to enable the local radio feature. Without location access, the app defaults to the national Paris feed. For users outside the Île-de-France region, this means they do not get their local Chérie FM affiliate's regional news and ads. The app does not explain this trade-off during the permission request. It simply asks for location and, if denied, continues playing the Paris feed without any notification. The app also requires storage permission to enable offline downloads. Without storage access, the download button for podcasts and radio shows is grayed out. The app does not offer an alternative like downloading to a temporary cache. It simply does not allow offline listening at all if storage permission is denied. The app requests both permissions at first launch, one after the other. Denying either one reduces the app's functionality significantly, but the app continues to work as a basic live radio stream. The app uses streaming technology that requires a stable connection with at least 128 kbps download speed. Below that threshold, audio interruptions occur. The app does not buffer ahead to compensate for speed drops. It streams in real time. A speed test before opening the app is the only way to know if the connection will handle it. The app does not display connection quality or suggest switching to a lower bitrate. The 576 kbps stream is fixed. There is no quality adjustment setting anywhere in the app. For users on slow connections, the app becomes unusable until they move to a better signal area.
