Another reviewer in Chinese said: "广告太多，要翻译的几个短句都得看上好多次广告，太累了" — too many ads, have to watch many ads for just a few short sentences. A third reviewer echoed: "广告太多，加载时也有，实在让人感到很心烦！！！" — too many ads, even during loading, very annoying. The ads are not just frequent. They are intrusive. They appear on every tap. They appear during loading. They appear when you are trying to translate a simple phrase. The app is free. Ads are expected. But this is beyond normal. This is a revenue model that prioritizes ad revenue over user experience. The app has 10 million downloads. It has a 4.7-star rating. But the reviews tell a different story. The ads are driving people away.

And then there is the subscription. The app offers a 3-day free trial. After that, you pay. One user on JustUseApp reported: "When you buy this app it goes straight to where it says get premium and start your free trial and get 3 days free and then you start paying like 20 dollars a month." Twenty dollars a month for a translation app. That is expensive. Google Translate is free. Microsoft Translator is free. DeepL is free. Why would anyone pay $20 a month for Duff Translate? The answer is: they would not. The app is not a serious translation tool. It is a cash grab. It is designed to lure users in with promises of baby translators and animal translators, then bombard them with ads and pressure them to subscribe. This is not a sustainable business model. It is a burn-and-churn model. And it shows.

The baby cry analyzer that no one asked for

The app has a baby translator. It claims to analyze your baby's cries and tell you what they mean. Categories include: diaper, hunger, tired, hug, sleepiness, and others. It also has an animal translator. It claims to translate dog barks and cat meows. It can even translate human speech into dog or cat sounds. These are gimmicks. They are not real. They are not scientifically validated. They are fun features. They are conversation starters. But they are not the reason people download a translation app. People download translation apps to translate languages. They want to read menus. They want to understand signs. They want to communicate with people who speak different languages. Duff Translate does all of that. It supports camera translation, voice translation, text translation, and object translation in over 100 languages. It has a document scanner and a PDF converter. It has an offline mode. These are useful features. But they are buried under the gimmicks. The app's marketing focuses on the baby and animal translators. This attracts attention. But it also attracts the wrong audience. People who download the app for the baby translator are disappointed when it does not work. People who download the app for the animal translator are disappointed when it does not work. People who download the app for real translation are disappointed by the ads.

The app's description is a mess. It is a wall of text. It repeats itself. It uses phrases like "marvelous, beautiful features" and "amazing animal language translator app." It is clearly machine-translated. The developer is based in Turkey. The app is available in multiple languages. But the translation is poor. The English description is awkward. The Chinese description is awkward. The app's interface is also poorly translated. This is a problem for a translation app. You would expect a translation app to have good translations. But Duff Translate does not. It is a translation app that cannot translate its own interface. This is ironic. It is also a sign of quality. The app is not polished. It is not professional. It is a hobby project that got popular. And now it is trying to make money. But it is not doing a good job.

Why the offline mode does not save you

Some of these are necessary. Some are not. Why does a translation app need to read your contacts? Why does it need to run at startup? Why does it need to prevent the phone from sleeping? These permissions are excessive. They are a red flag. The app is collecting more data than it needs. It is sharing data with third parties. The Play Store data safety section states: "此应用可能会与第三方分享这些类型的数据应用活动、应用信息和性能和设备 ID 或其他 ID" — this app may share app activity, app info and performance, and device ID with third parties. It also collects financial information. This is concerning. The app is not just a translation tool. It is a data collection tool. And that is the real cost of free.
