Tapping the add button opens a menu where users can paste a URL, select a local file, or enter Xtream Codes credentials. This is the gateway to all content — without a playlist, the app shows nothing but an empty grid and a setup prompt. The entire experience depends entirely on what the user brings to it.

Once a playlist loads, the channel list populates instantly. Categories from the playlist appear as tabs, and the search bar filters channels in real time. Selecting a channel starts playback within a second or two, depending on the stream source. The video player fills the screen with standard controls: play/pause, volume, brightness, and a gear icon for advanced settings. Swiping vertically adjusts brightness, and swiping horizontally seeks through the stream — gestures that work reliably across both portrait and landscape orientations.

The EPG tab sits alongside the channel list. If the playlist includes an XMLTV source, the guide shows current and upcoming programs for each channel. Tapping a program in the EPG switches to that channel immediately. This integration between playlist loading and EPG data is seamless — the app does not require separate EPG configuration; it reads whatever metadata the playlist provides. Users who load playlists without EPG data simply see an empty guide section, with no error message or fallback.

What happens when a playlist fails to load

Users have reported that adding playlists can be problematic. Some URLs time out, others return parsing errors, and in some cases the app crashes entirely during the import process. The app does not provide detailed error messages — a failed import typically results in a generic "playlist not loaded" toast notification. This lack of feedback leaves users guessing whether the URL is wrong, the format is unsupported, or the server is down.

The playlist update feature, which checks for changes on a schedule, can compound these issues. If the initial playlist loads but later updates fail, the app may silently fall back to a cached version without notifying the user. This means viewers could be watching outdated channel lists without realizing new channels have been added or removed. The update interval is configurable in the settings, but the default behavior and failure handling are not documented anywhere within the app.

For users who rely on Xtream Codes API logins, the process is more structured but not immune to problems. Entering server, username, and password triggers a validation request; if the credentials are incorrect, the app returns a generic "login failed" message. There is no indication of whether the failure is due to network issues, server unavailability, or incorrect credentials. This forces users to troubleshoot blindly.

How the player handles different stream formats

The app supports HLS, MPEG-TS, RTSP, and HTTP streams, with hardware acceleration enabled by default. This covers the vast majority of IPTV sources. Playback is generally smooth on modern devices, with buffering managed by a configurable buffer size setting. Users can adjust this buffer to prioritize either faster channel switching or smoother playback on unstable connections. The default buffer size works well for most streams, but power users may want to increase it for high-bitrate channels.

Subtitle support includes SRT, SSA, and ASS formats, which are embedded in the stream or loaded externally. The app detects available subtitle tracks and allows selection from the player's audio/subtitle menu. Audio track selection works similarly, supporting multiple language tracks within a single stream. These features are standard for a modern player, but they are implemented reliably — track switching happens without interrupting playback.

Chromecast support is a key selling point, but it has drawn mixed feedback. Casting works when the device and the Chromecast are on the same network, and the app detects the cast device automatically. However, some users report that casting can be inconsistent, with the stream sometimes failing to start or dropping mid-playback. The app does not provide a fallback option or diagnostic information when casting fails.

What the version history tells us

The version history shows a pattern of regular but minor updates. Version 2.2.0.52, the latest at the time of this audit, includes a changelog that simply reads "Thanks for using Tidox Player!" This provides no information about what actually changed. Earlier versions, such as 2.2.0.45 and 2.2.0.30, had similar vague changelogs or "minor bug fixes and improvements." The lack of detailed release notes makes it difficult for users to know whether reported issues have been addressed in new versions.

One exception is version 2.2.0.27, which included specific fixes: the arrow-down button now minimizes the player in portrait mode, the top bar no longer disappears after a minimize swipe, and minimize gestures have been improved. These are concrete improvements, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Most updates do not specify what was fixed or added, leaving users to discover changes through trial and error.

The file size has varied across versions, from 23.77 MB to 39.9 MB, suggesting that the APK includes all assets locally rather than downloading them on demand. This means each update requires a full download and install, which can be cumbersome for users on limited data plans. The app requires Android 7.0 or higher and supports arm64-v8a architecture, which covers most modern devices but excludes older hardware.
