Automatic Email Sorting Changes Daily Workflow
Proton Mail 7.11.2 introduces automatic email categorization. Incoming messages are sorted into six folders: Primary, Social, Promotions, Newsletters, Transactions, and Updates. The Primary folder holds personal and work messages, while the others separate social notifications, promotions, subscriptions, order confirmations, and automated alerts. New users get the feature enabled by default; existing users receive a notification to opt in. The sorting can be disabled entirely in settings.
Privacy-First Categorization Preserves Encryption
The categorization system does not read email content. Proton assigns categories using metadata only — sender address, subject line, and similar surface-level data. Zero-access encryption and end-to-end encryption for Proton-to-Proton and password-protected messages remain fully intact. The company states that enabling categories does not change how Proton Mail handles data, and no ads are shown inside the categorized inbox.
