About Bolt Food Courier
The registration screen asks for a phone number and a password. No account from outside Bolt's delivery network works. The app does not let you browse or explore without creating an account. This is not a general-purpose delivery app. It is a locked portal for couriers who have already signed up through the Bolt website. The moment you tap "Log In," you are committing to a workflow that many users later find frustrating.
Once logged in, the dashboard shows your current status: online or offline. The "Go Online" button is prominent. Tapping it makes you available for orders. The map loads your current location. The app then waits for a new order notification. That notification is the critical moment. If it works, you accept the order, navigate to the restaurant, pick up the food, and deliver it to the customer. If it fails, you miss the order. Your acceptance rate drops. Your earnings suffer.
How the notification system and the background behavior actually work together
The new order notification is not a standalone feature. It depends on the app running in the background. When the app is minimized, it relies on push notifications to alert you. But the notification system is unreliable. Couriers report that the app "doesn't clearly announce that there is a new order when out of the app" and that "1 in 3 orders will play the music" while other times it's just a small notification. This means a courier might be waiting for an order, have the phone in their pocket, and miss the alert entirely. The order goes to another courier. The missed order translates directly to lost income.
However, the notification issue has a catch. The app also keeps two other notifications on at all times. These are persistent. They clutter the notification shade. They make it harder to spot the actual order alert. Couriers have reported that after updates, the sound for new orders stops working altogether. This creates a gap where a courier might be online, available, and ready to work, but the app fails to notify them of available orders. The result is wasted time and reduced earnings.
What the changelog actually changed
The version history shows repeated "internal optimisations and improvements" without details. The one clear change is the addition of the Early Cashout feature. Another update improved the navigation experience. But the changelog does not mention the notification issues that couriers report. After some updates, the notification sound stops working. The app becomes unreliable for its primary purpose until the courier restarts the app or reinstalls it. Multiple reviews on the Play Store describe this exact problem.
The technical detail that stops the workflow
The app requires location permission to show your position on the map and to assign nearby orders. If you deny location access, the app cannot function. The permission is requested during initial setup. If you skip it, you cannot enable it later from within the app. You must go to your device settings, find Bolt Food Courier, and manually grant location permission. After that, the map updates to show your location. But the app does not refresh the order queue automatically. You have to toggle the "Go Online" button off and on again to start receiving orders. This manual refresh is the final action you take before the app stops providing new information.
