The Fare Problem That Drivers Actually Talk About

Open the Play Store page for Captain Baly and one review jumps out immediately. A driver named MGX posted in August 2024: "Very low price rides, and not worth it, very unfair for the captain(driver)." Another driver, Wael Al-Ebadi, called it a "Very bad experience" with "Unfair pricing" and "Bad customer service" and added "No call center." These are not casual complaints. These are working drivers in Iraq who depend on this app for their daily income, and they are saying the fares do not cover the work. The app promises more requests and higher monthly income. But if the fare on each ride is too low, more requests just means more work for less pay. This is the central tension of Captain Baly — and it is the first thing any driver considering this app needs to understand.

The app is built for the Iraqi ride-hailing market. Iraq has seen a surge in demand for taxis and transportation services, and Baly positions itself as the answer. The company behind it, Two Rivers Food & Beverages Trading LLC, operates out of Dubai but runs a full ride-hailing operation inside Iraq. Captain Baly is the driver-side app. There is a separate passenger app called "Baly | Order Taxi and Food" that riders use to book trips. Together, they form a two-sided platform. The driver app handles the pickup, the navigation, and the fare collection. But the fare itself is set by the platform, and that is where the friction starts.

How the GPS and Fare System Actually Work Together

The core mechanics of Captain Baly are straightforward. The app includes a GPS positioning system that helps the driver locate the customer. This is not a separate map tool — it is built directly into the driver interface. When a ride request comes in, the driver sees the customer's location on the map. They navigate to that spot, pick up the passenger, and complete the trip. The fare collection is handled through the app as well. The driver does not need to negotiate prices or handle cash unless the passenger chooses to pay that way. The app also offers flexibility in choosing working hours and times. Drivers can log in when they want and log off when they want. There is no shift requirement and no minimum hours.

Here is where the original analysis comes in. The flexibility feature and the GPS feature are designed to work in sequence. A driver chooses when to work — say, during morning rush hour or late evening — and then uses the GPS to find nearby passengers efficiently. In theory, this should maximize earnings: work the busy hours, pick up passengers quickly, complete more rides. But the low-fare complaint changes the math. If each ride pays very little, then working more hours only increases the number of low-paying rides. The driver is not earning more per hour; they are just doing more trips for the same low rate. One reviewer put it bluntly: "Very low price rides, and not worth it". The flexibility becomes a trap if the underlying fare structure does not support a living wage. This is not stated anywhere on the Play Store description. It emerges only when you combine the GPS feature, the flexible hours feature, and the real driver complaints about fare pricing.

The Onboarding Reality and Driver Screening Process

Before a driver can even open the app and start accepting rides, there is a screening process. According to the official Baly taxi website, every captain must go through a series of procedures that include qualifications, experience, and official documentation. The company reviews all documents before acceptance and monitors driver performance continuously through tracking systems. Each ride has a unique number that allows the company to trace details and resolve any issues quickly. This means the app is not a free-for-all. Drivers are vetted. Their performance is tracked. There is accountability on both sides.

Once onboard, the driver uses the app to receive requests. The passenger app — Baly | Order Taxi and Food — allows riders to choose between private cars or taxis, select payment methods, and book trips. The driver app receives these requests and displays the customer location. The passenger can pay in three ways: cash, online via electronic payment cards, or through Baly wallet credit. The driver collects the fare through the app's built-in system. The process is designed to be smooth. But the complaints about customer service and the lack of a call center suggest that when something goes wrong — a fare dispute, a missed pickup, a technical glitch — there is no easy way for the driver to get help. The app handles the transaction but does not necessarily handle the human problems that come with it.

The Permission That Makes the App Work

The app requires location access to function. Without GPS, the driver cannot see the customer's location and cannot navigate to the pickup point. This is a hard requirement. The app also collects personal information, financial information, and device or other IDs. Data is encrypted in transit, and users can request that their data be deleted. The app may share app activity and performance data with third parties. These are standard for ride-hailing apps, but they are worth noting because drivers are sharing real-time location data and financial details. The privacy policy is provided by the developer and may be updated over time.
