Throws are counted as they land, and the app assigns scores to each dart. The challenge comes with tight groupings. When darts cluster close together, the camera sometimes misses one or misorders them. Users have reported needing to correct three out of every hundred throws, which is acceptable but still a friction point.
The dual-camera setup is the workaround for occlusion. A second device can be paired to create a two-angle view, which reduces the chances of a dart being blocked from the primary camera. The latest version 4.4.3 fixed an issue where the second camera could not be set, so the feature is now more stable. But this requires a second compatible device, and the app does not support Chromebooks or Android emulators.
DartBot and the Coin Economy
The DartBot is a practice partner that plays X01 and Standard Cricket at multiple difficulty levels. It is supposed to simulate a real opponent, but recent versions have drawn complaints. Some users say the bot's scoring logic is broken, with the AI making unrealistic throws or failing to finish legs properly. The bot is also tied to the coin system, which is where the app's business model becomes visible.
Coins are required for online video play. Each match costs a small number of coins, and players can purchase packs starting at $7.99 for 50 coins. The Pro subscription, at $14.99 per year, removes some limitations but does not eliminate the coin requirement entirely. This creates a recurring cost that adds up for regular online players. The free version gives access to practice games and local scoring, but the online lobby and video matches are effectively gated behind a pay-per-use model.
The coin system is a friction point that satisfied users accept but do not love. One reviewer noted that the auto-score and camera are great, but the coin requirement makes the app feel less generous than competitors. Another user pointed out that the Pro version is still cheap compared to hardware systems, but the coin costs for online play can catch new users off guard.
Game Library and Statistics Depth
Dartsmind includes a wide range of game modes beyond the standard X01 and Cricket. Practice games include Around the Clock, Bob's 27, and 99 Darts. Party games like Killer, Shanghai, and Bermuda add variety for group play. Each game tracks detailed statistics, including averages, checkout percentages, and leg-by-leg breakdowns. The stats are presented in clear graphs that show improvement over time.
The depth of statistics is one of the app's strongest features. Players can review every leg they have played, compare their performance against the DartBot, and identify weak spots in their game. The stats are stored locally and synced across devices if the user logs in. However, the admin-only view limitation means that in local multiplayer games, only the person who started the session can see the full stats for all players. This is a design choice that frustrates some users who want equal access to data.
The game lobby supports up to six players in local mode and four online. The online matchmaking is functional but not as polished as dedicated platforms. Users have reported occasional lag and disconnections, though these are not widespread. The app's strength here is the variety of games, not the robustness of the online infrastructure.
Offline Processing and Privacy
All AI processing runs on the device. This means the app works offline, and video frames are never sent to a server. The privacy policy confirms that no location data is collected, though the app does use Bluetooth to detect nearby devices for gameplay matching. Data transmission is encrypted with HTTPS, and users can request deletion of their data.
The Exodus privacy report found two trackers in the app, both related to crash reporting. The app requests 30 permissions, including WAKE_LOCK to prevent the phone from sleeping during use. This is necessary for continuous camera operation but does raise a minor battery concern. The app does not share data with third parties, according to the Play Store's data safety section.
The local processing also means the app is sensitive to device performance. Older phones with weaker chips may not support auto-scoring at all. The compatibility check at first launch is the gatekeeper, and users with unsupported devices are left with manual scoring only. This is a significant limitation that is not always clear from the store description.
Dual-Camera Beta and Device Requirements
The dual-camera feature is still in beta, but it addresses the single biggest weakness of the app: occlusion. When one camera view is blocked by a dart, the second camera can still see the board and score the throw. The setup requires two devices, both running the app, and they must be connected via the same network. The latest update fixed a bug that prevented the second device from being recognized, so the feature is now more reliable.
Device compatibility is strict. Auto-scoring is supported on iPhone models with A12 chips or newer, and on Android devices that meet the real-time inference requirements. The app does not support Chromebooks or Android emulators. This means users cannot run the app on a laptop or desktop without an emulator, and even then, the camera access may not work properly. The app is designed for phones and tablets, and it enforces that limitation at launch.
The dual-camera setup is not a substitute for a dedicated hardware system like Scolia or Autodarts. It is a software-based solution that uses existing devices, which makes it cheaper but less polished. The accuracy improvement is noticeable, but the setup time and the need for two devices make it impractical for casual use.
