The office might be busy, might have already found someone through another channel, or might simply not have the time to review every application. The professional never knows.

The original analysis here is that the algorithm and the office dashboard are designed to work in sequence, but they operate in isolation. The algorithm pushes applications to the office. The office dashboard receives them. But there is no feedback loop that closes the circle for the professional. The app could, for example, show the professional that their application was viewed. It could show that the office is still reviewing. It could provide a reason code when a shift is not confirmed – "office filled the shift internally," "office chose another candidate," "shift was cancelled." None of that exists. Tax Classification and the 1099 Reality

GoTu classifies its professionals as 1099 independent contractors. This means no taxes are withheld from shift payments. The professional receives the full amount and is responsible for paying their own federal, state, and local taxes. For some, this is a benefit – they control their own tax situation. For others, it's a burden. The 1099 classification has been criticized as illegal under current tax code, with one review stating that taxing hygienists as 1099 contractors is "blatantly illegal." The company acknowledges the dual model – it now offers an "employee" option for platform workers in some states. But the default for most shifts remains the contractor model.

The app itself does not handle taxes. It pays out the full shift amount directly to the professional's bank account. The professional must track their income, file quarterly estimated taxes, and manage their own deductions. This is not explained in the app's onboarding flow. Users discover it later, when they receive a 1099-NEC form and realize they owe thousands in taxes. The app's marketing focuses on flexibility and control. The fine print is about tax liability. This is a real-world limitation that sits underneath the glossy feature list.

Office Fee Structure – 22.5% or $60 Per Shift

Offices pay a fee to use the platform. For registered dental hygienists, the fee is 22.5% of the shift pay. For dental assistants, the fee is a flat $60 per shift. This fee is held until the shift is confirmed and hours are verified. The app does not show this fee to the professional – it's an office-side cost. But it affects the professional indirectly. Offices that are sensitive to cost might be less likely to confirm shifts that carry a high fee. They might prefer to hire directly or use a cheaper platform. The 22.5% fee is higher than some competitors – Teero charges 12% – which could drive offices away from GoTu.

The platform has waived conversion fees, meaning offices can hire a temp permanently without paying an additional fee. This is a strategic move to encourage long-term placements. But it doesn't change the per-shift fee structure. For a hygienist earning $50 per hour for an 8-hour shift, the office pays an additional $90 in fees. That's $90 that could have gone to the hygienist or been saved by the office. The fee structure is transparent on the office side but invisible to the professional. The professional only sees the pay rate they will receive, not the total cost to the office. This creates a disconnect – the professional thinks they are getting a certain rate, but the office is paying significantly more, which could affect how offices view the value of the platform.
