When a user downloads an issue for offline use, the app stores that file locally. But when the app updates, or when the user clears cache, or when the device runs low on storage, those local files can become orphaned. The app still shows the issue in the library with a checkmark indicating it is downloaded, but tapping it triggers a fresh download instead of opening the local copy. This forces the user to download the same issue twice, consuming both time and data.

The restore purchase function is supposed to fix this. In theory, logging back into the PocketMags account should recover all purchased issues. In practice, multiple users have reported that after an update, their special editions disappeared and the restore option did nothing. Another said they deleted and reinstalled the app, only to find that their downloaded patterns were missing and the restore process failed repeatedly. Real-world performance and what breaks

The app has a reputation for instability that is hard to ignore. Multiple sources document persistent crashing. Another said it freezes on the "100th issue" page and does not work even after updating, deleting, and reinstalling. These are not isolated incidents. This is a limitation that affects the perceived value of the subscription, especially given that the monthly cost is the same as or higher than the print edition in some regions.

The subscription model itself has quirks. The app offers 1-month and 12-month plans, with auto-renewal unless cancelled more than 24 hours before the period ends. Users have reported that their subscription does not show up on the day it is supposed to, and that back issues that came with the subscription still ask for payment.
