About Mattermost Beta

The Mattermost Beta app opens to a login screen that asks for a server URL. There is no demo server. There is no test account. The app does nothing without an existing Mattermost server. This is the first thing to understand. It is not a standalone chat app. It is a client for self-hosted infrastructure. The Play Store description calls it "secure workplace messaging from behind your firewall." That is accurate but incomplete. The app does not create a firewall. It does not host data. It does not manage users. It only connects to a server that the user or organization must already have deployed. The server must be at least version 10.11.0 for the current beta client to work properly. Older servers may fail to connect or show unexpected behavior. This dependency is stated clearly in the app's description, but many users still install it expecting a ready-to-use Slack alternative and find nothing but a blank URL field.

Once a valid server URL is entered, the app attempts to establish a connection. If the server is reachable and running a compatible version, the login screen appears. Users can then sign in with their existing credentials. From that point, the app functions as a full-featured messaging client. Private groups, direct messages, and team-wide channels are all available. File sharing works through the image viewer and attachment system. The interface is clean and responsive, though some users have reported that the app constantly freezes and requires a force restart. Others have noted that font sizes are too large on Android. These issues are not universal but appear frequently enough to be noted across multiple user reports.

How the server version requirement shapes the experience

The server URL is not optional. It is the single most important piece of information the app needs. Without it, the app is essentially a login screen with no destination. This creates a specific workflow that distinguishes Mattermost from cloud-based competitors like Slack or Microsoft Teams. The user must first set up a Mattermost server, either by deploying it themselves or by being given access to an existing deployment. The server can run on various operating systems including Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Minimum hardware requirements start at 1 vCPU with 2GB of RAM for up to 1,000 users. PostgreSQL is the recommended database. The server version requirement is particularly important for beta users. The current beta client requires server version 10.11.0 or higher. Older servers may not be able to connect or may have unexpected behavior. This means that users who want to test the beta must first ensure their server is updated to a compatible version. If the server is not updated, the app will fail to connect and provide minimal error feedback. The user is left to troubleshoot the server configuration themselves, often without clear guidance from the app itself. This creates a barrier to entry that is not present in cloud-based alternatives. Users migrating from Slack may find this frustrating, as Slack does not require any server setup or maintenance.

Once the server is running and properly configured, the administrator must set up the correct SiteURL, enable the appropriate authentication methods, and ensure the firewall rules allow traffic on the necessary ports. The mobile app then connects to that server using the URL provided during setup. This is the point where the self-hosted model either works smoothly or becomes a source of frustration. If the server is not configured correctly, the app will fail to connect and provide minimal error feedback. The user is left to troubleshoot the server configuration themselves, often without clear guidance from the app itself.

What actually changed in recent versions

The official changelog for the current version says only "Various bug fixes." This is the standard phrase used when no specific details are provided. The lack of detail means users do not know which bugs were fixed, whether their specific issue was addressed, or what new bugs might have been introduced. The developer does not publish detailed release notes for the beta client, at least not in the Play Store listing. Users who want deeper visibility into changes must monitor the GitHub repository or the Mattermost discussion forums, where individual commits and issue reports provide more granular information. Despite the vague changelog, the beta program continues to release updates on a regular cadence. Version 2.43.0 was released in late July 2026. Version 2.41.0 was released in June 2026. Each release is slightly larger than the last, with the APK size growing from around 65 MB in early 2025 to over 100 MB in mid-2026. This growth suggests new features and code changes are being added, even if the changelog does not describe them. The beta client also requires Android 7.0 or newer, which excludes older devices but keeps the app compatible with the vast majority of modern Android phones.

The beta program exists specifically to test these updates before they reach the stable production apps. Users who join the beta get early access to new features and more frequent updates, but they also accept the risk of encountering bugs that have not yet been fully resolved. Known issues in the v2.0 beta include inaccurate notification badge numbers, search not yet implemented, and some account and channel settings not yet available. These limitations are important to consider before installing the beta version.

A niche use case: self-hosted Slack alternative for privacy-conscious teams

One of the most interesting use cases for Mattermost Beta is as a self-hosted alternative to Slack for organizations that prioritize data sovereignty and security. Mattermost is designed to run behind a firewall, meaning all data stays within the organization's control. This is a key differentiator from cloud-based solutions where data is stored on third-party servers. For teams in regulated industries or those with strict data privacy requirements, this self-hosted model is essential. The app's Slack-compatible webhooks and integrations allow organizations to migrate their existing Slack workflows with minimal changes. This compatibility is a deliberate feature, not an accident. The Mattermost developers have built the system to accept Slack-formatted JSON payloads and render them correctly within the Mattermost interface. This makes the app a viable replacement for organizations that want to leave Slack but keep their existing automation workflows intact. However, the self-hosted model also introduces complexity. The organization must maintain its own server infrastructure, handle updates, and ensure security. For small teams or individual users, this overhead may be too high. For larger organizations with dedicated IT resources, the trade-off between control and convenience may be worth it.
