No Account, Just Walking

The app opens to a list of available trips. No sign-up screen blocks the way. A player picks a trip or pastes a host code, chooses a nickname and avatar, and the map appears. The map shows the current location and the next stop. The player walks toward it. The app does not ask for location permissions at launch—it waits until the first stop selection. That permission request is the only interruption. After granting it, the game runs without further prompts.

This minimal friction is deliberate. The developer, Bloop AB, designed Tipzy for spontaneous group play. A family at a park, a group of friends at a festival, or a corporate team-building event can start playing within seconds. The app does not require creating an account or remembering a password. The host builds the trip at tipzy.me, shares a code, and everyone joins. The game treats every player as equal—no leader has special controls during the walk. This flat structure keeps the focus on the physical activity and the trivia.

The stops are real places. Not random pins on a map. The host selects actual locations—a statue, a café, a viewpoint—and assigns a question category to each. When a player gets close enough, the marker opens. The app uses GPS to verify proximity. This geofencing creates a natural rhythm: walk, arrive, answer, walk again. The physical movement is not optional. Players cannot cheat by staying in one place and tapping through questions. The app knows where they are.

How the Questions and Scoring Actually Work

Each marker reveals a set of categories. The host chooses the categories when building the trip. Example categories include "Easy as Pie," "Do You Remember 2020," and "Pippi on Pippi." The player selects a category they believe they know best. The app then presents a multiple-choice question. Correct answers earn points. Faster answers earn more points—the score ticks down as the player thinks. This speed component adds pressure. A player who hesitates loses potential points, even if they eventually answer correctly.

The app includes three power-ups that swing the leaderboard. The Risk Ticket doubles the stakes: a correct answer earns three times the points, but a wrong answer deducts points. Players use it before selecting a category. The 50/50 removes two wrong answers, leaving only the correct one and one distractor. The Speed Bonus rewards quick answers with extra points. These power-ups are available by default—the host does not need to configure them. They add a layer of strategy. A player trailing on the leaderboard might use a Risk Ticket on a category they are confident about to catch up. A player leading might use 50/50 to secure a safe answer and maintain their position.

The leaderboard updates in real time. Every player sees their rank change as others answer questions. This live feedback keeps the competition visible. The app does not hide scores or delay updates. The recap screen at the end of the trip shows every missed question. Players can review what they got wrong, which helps them prepare for a rematch. The loser buys coffee—the app's description frames it as a friendly wager, but the game itself does not enforce any payment. It is purely social.

What the Host Sees on the Other End

Tipzy is not just a player app. The host builds the entire experience at tipzy.me. The host drops stops on a map, picks a question category for each, and the platform's AI generates the questions. The host can edit any question or write their own from scratch. This flexibility means a host can tailor the quiz to a specific group—kids' trivia for a family day, local history for a community event, or company facts for a team-building exercise. The host publishes the route once, and it stays live around the clock. Players discover and play it on their own, with no ongoing effort from the host.

The host can also run a timed competitive event. These events have up to sixty stops, a two-hour time limit, and a single winner. Teams play simultaneously on the same map. The host watches the action unfold from a laptop—a live activity feed shows team positions, photo and video submissions, and the leaderboard. The host can pause the event, adjust point values per stop, and require GPS check-ins or photo tasks. This event mode transforms the app from a casual walk into a structured competition. It is designed for corporate retreats, school groups, or large parties.

The host pays nothing to build and test a route. The platform charges only when the host goes live. This pay-when-you-publish model lowers the barrier to entry. A host can experiment with different question sets and stop placements without financial risk. The free Tipzy app handles the player side. The host does not need to distribute a separate app or manage logins. The shared code is the only connection point.

When the GPS and the Questions Work Together

The most interesting behavior emerges when a player arrives at a stop. The app checks the GPS coordinates. If the player is within range, the marker opens. The player then selects a category and answers the question. The question is not tied to the location itself—the host can assign any category to any stop. This decoupling means a player might answer a history question at a statue, a geography question at a café, and a pop culture question at a viewpoint. The location provides the context, but the questions stand alone.

This design creates a layered experience. The physical walk provides the structure, but the trivia provides the engagement. A player who is not interested in the location still has a reason to stop—the question. A player who is not interested in trivia still has a reason to walk—the next stop. The two mechanics reinforce each other. The app does not rely on either one alone. This duality is what makes Tipzy different from a pure walking app or a pure quiz app.

However, the app has a limitation: the questions are not location-aware. A question about a specific landmark does not appear only when the player is at that landmark. The host assigns categories, not specific questions tied to specific stops. This means a player might answer a question about Swedish history at a stop that has no historical significance. The disconnect is not jarring, but it misses an opportunity for deeper contextual learning. The host could manually write location-specific questions, but the AI generation does not do this automatically.

Permissions, Privacy, and the Download

The app requires GPS access to function. It also requires network connectivity to sync answers and update the leaderboard in real time. The app does not track location in the background—the privacy policy on the Apple App Store states that location is used only while playing. No data is collected for advertising or analytics. The app does not request access to contacts, camera, or storage. This minimal permission set is a strength. Players do not need to worry about the app accessing personal data or draining battery in the background.
