Opening the app: the store health dashboard

The moment VUSION Link 2 finishes loading, you are presented with a dashboard that shows the real-time status of every electronic shelf label in the store. No tutorial. No guided tour. Just a grid of numbers: online devices, synced devices, at-risk devices, offline labels, low-battery warnings, and access point status. The numbers are color-coded — green for good, yellow for warning, red for critical. This is not a consumer app. This is a tool for retail staff who need to know, at a glance, whether their store's digital shelf system is functioning.

What is not obvious from the Play Store description is how this dashboard actually drives the rest of the app. Tapping on any problematic label takes you directly to the matching screen, where you can scan a label ID and link it to a product. The app does not explain the connection between the dashboard and the matching workflow. You have to discover it yourself. This is a design choice that prioritizes efficiency over hand-holding, but it can be disorienting for new users who are not already familiar with the Vusion ecosystem.

The app is currently available only to beta testers, according to the Play Store page. This means that the version available for download is not the final production release. Beta users are essentially guinea pigs for new features like the manual location mode and the improved Bluetooth permission management. The changelog explicitly mentions these additions, but it does not explain why they were added or what problems they solve. For a retail environment where downtime is costly, this lack of transparency is a real concern.

Switching stores without logging out: a workflow that actually works

The "Switch stores" feature is one of the most useful hidden gems in VUSION Link 2. It lets you move from one store to another without logging out of the app. This is critical for retail staff who work across multiple branches in the same city or who have been assigned to more than one store in VUSION Manager. Instead of entering credentials every time you switch locations, you simply tap "Options," select "Change store," pick the store from a list, and tap "Save." The entire app updates to reflect the new store's data.

What the documentation does not say is how this feature interacts with the "Choose a scenario" feature. Scenarios are pre-configured label display formats that define how a label will show information for a specific item or group of items. These scenarios are created in the Studio application and deployed to the store. You cannot create or modify scenarios directly from VUSION Link 2. When you switch stores, the app automatically loads the scenarios configured for that store. This means that a user moving from Store A to Store B will see different label display options without having to manually reconfigure anything.

This is a powerful combination, but it also introduces a potential point of failure. If a scenario is misconfigured in the Studio application, the error will propagate to all stores that use that scenario. The app does not provide any validation or warning about scenario misconfigurations. It simply applies whatever scenario is selected. For retail staff who are not involved in the configuration process, this can lead to incorrect pricing or product information being displayed on the shelf. The app assumes that scenarios are always correct, which is not a safe assumption in a busy retail environment.

The barcode scanning problem: QR code only, no barcodes

One of the most frequently cited complaints about VUSION Link 2 is its limited scanning capability. The app's camera can detect QR codes, but it cannot scan traditional barcodes. This is a significant limitation because many retail products use barcodes, not QR codes. According to user reviews on Chrome-Stats, the app "lacks barcode scanning functionality, only QR code scanning works." Another review states: "The camera detects qr codes, but no bar codes." This is not a minor oversight. It is a fundamental flaw that forces users to manually enter product codes instead of scanning them.

Manual entry is also problematic because the keyboard input does not work consistently on Android. Multiple users have reported that the keyboard fails to register inputs, preventing manual item entry. One review on Chrome-Stats notes: "Keyboard input does not work on Android, preventing manual entry." This means that if the QR code scanner fails or if the product only has a barcode, the user is effectively stuck. They cannot scan the item, and they cannot type the code manually. The only workaround is to use a different device or to switch to the iOS version, which reportedly does not have these issues.

The discrepancy between the Android and iOS versions is another point of frustration. The iOS version supports NFC functionality, while the Android version does not. This is mentioned in the Chrome-Stats review summary: "NFC feature is unavailable on Android despite being available on iPhone." For retail environments that use NFC for inventory management, this is a deal-breaker. The app is marketed as a multi-platform solution, but the Android version is clearly inferior in terms of scanning capabilities. This is not a bug; it is a deliberate design choice that prioritizes iOS over Android.

Storage permissions and the actual file size

The app's APK size varies by version, ranging from approximately 65 MB to 102 MB. This is relatively small for a modern app, but the app does not explain why it needs access to location data. The Play Store's data safety section states that data is not encrypted and cannot be deleted. This is a red flag for any app that handles sensitive store data.
