Getting started with Barakah

Opening Barakah for the first time presents a clean interface with a map view and a list of nearby restaurants. The app asks for location permission immediately. This is not optional. Without granting location access, the app cannot show available surplus meals. After allowing location, the main screen populates with offers from partner restaurants, cafés, and bakeries. Each listing shows the restaurant name, the meal description, the original price, and the discounted price. Discounts range up to 70% off. The interface is straightforward. There is no tutorial or walkthrough. New users must explore on their own. The bottom navigation bar has four tabs: Home, Explore, Orders, and Profile. The Home tab shows nearby offers. The Explore tab allows searching for specific restaurants or meal types. The Orders tab shows past and current orders. The Profile tab contains account settings, payment methods, and gift vouchers. Registration requires a phone number and OTP verification. Some users have reported issues with the OTP submission process, but this appears to be less common than with other apps. Once logged in, users can browse offers, add items to a cart, and checkout. Payment options include Apple Pay, Mada, and credit card. The entire onboarding process takes about three minutes, assuming the location and OTP work without issues.

For users who want to save even more, the app offers a "Barakah Bag" feature. This is a curated selection of surplus items from specific vendors at additional discounts. The bag is available for a limited time and must be ordered in advance. Once ordered, the user picks up the bag at the store at a specified time. This feature is not prominently displayed. It is buried in the Explore tab under a separate section. New users might miss it entirely. The app also allows users to follow favorite restaurants. Following a restaurant sends push notifications when new surplus meals become available. This is useful for users who have specific preferences. However, the notification settings are not customizable. Users cannot choose which types of notifications they receive. This leads to notification fatigue for some users.

When member experiences meet restaurant following

The app's core value is connecting users with surplus meals at discounts. The "Member Experiences" feature allows users to see what others have purchased from specific restaurants. This is a social feature that builds community. A user can browse through photos and reviews of meals that other members have bought. This helps in deciding whether to order from a particular restaurant. The feature also allows users to share their own finds and discover hidden gems. The integration between Member Experiences and restaurant following is where the app shows its potential. Suppose a user sees a positive review of a meal from a specific restaurant in the Member Experiences section. The user can then tap on the restaurant name to view its profile. From there, the user can follow the restaurant to receive updates on surplus meals. This creates a seamless loop: discovery, evaluation, and action. In theory, this works well. In practice, problems arise when the Member Experiences section is not updated frequently. Some users have reported that the photos and reviews are outdated. The app does not indicate when a review was posted. This makes it difficult to gauge the current quality of a restaurant's surplus meals. Furthermore, the follow feature does not always trigger notifications. Users have reported missing out on deals because they did not receive an alert. This clash between the two features creates a frustrating experience. The app does not provide a way to test notification settings or to see a history of past notifications. Users are left guessing whether their follow action was successful.

Furthermore, the app's handling of order confirmations is also problematic. After placing an order, the user receives a confirmation screen. However, the app does not always send a confirmation email or SMS. Some users have reported that their orders were not processed even though the app showed a confirmation. This is likely a synchronization issue between the app and the backend. The app does not provide a way to check order status or to cancel an order. Users are left with uncertainty. The original analysis here is that the app's architecture treats Member Experiences and restaurant following as separate modules. They are integrated at the UI level, but the backend synchronization is weak. When one module fails, the other does not compensate. This is a design flaw that is not apparent from reading the Play Store description.

Real-world performance and common issues

User reports from various platforms paint a mixed picture of the app's stability. Some users praise the app for its easy-to-use interface and the ability to save money on meals. They appreciate the variety of restaurants and the discounts offered. The app's mission to reduce food waste is also a positive factor for many users. However, others report persistent issues with food quality. Several users have complained that the meals they received were cold, old, or did not match the pictures in the app. This is a significant problem because the app's value proposition is "fresh" food. When the food is not fresh, the entire purpose of the app is undermined. The app does not provide a way to report quality issues directly. Users have to contact customer service, which is often unresponsive. Some users have reported that customer service is the worst they have ever experienced. This erodes trust in the platform.

Another issue is the app's handling of pricing. Some users have complained that the app does not verify the real prices of stores. The discounted price shown in the app may not reflect the actual price at the store. This leads to disappointment at checkout. The app does not provide a way to verify prices before ordering. Users are left trusting the app's information. When the information is wrong, the user feels cheated. The app also has occasional crashes, particularly on older Android devices. The crashes are not frequent, but they are disruptive. The app does not display a crash report or offer to send logs to the developer. It simply disappears and returns to the home screen. Restarting the app usually resolves the issue temporarily. On the positive side, the app's push notifications for new deals work reliably for most users. However, the notification settings are not customizable, which can be annoying for users who want to control what they receive.

Location permission and the changelog

The app requires location permission to show nearby offers. This is stated clearly during installation. However, the app does not explain why it needs access to the device's storage. This permission is requested but not justified in the interface. The developer's changelog for the current version simply states: "Fixes and tune-ups to make finding deals quicker and easier." No specific bugs are named. No performance metrics are provided.
